Span

In response to Spick’s rapid rise in popularity, editor R.T. Staples swiftly complied with reader demands for fortnightly publication instead of monthly. However, he did so in a highly innovative and visionary manner. He introduced a new title, Span, which would appear between editions of Spick.

This clever move proved highly popular. It was far more impressive to boast of two titles with 100 editions than one with 200. Span offered the opportunity to explore different styles, content, and, most importantly, generate greater profits. Staples cleverly exploited the collector’s desire to own a complete set of everything ToCo produced.

The first edition of Span was launched on 6 September 1954. From the outset, the format was similar to Spick, and the two magazines were designed to complement each other throughout their respective lifespans. Span finally ceased publication in October 1976.
