June Palmer

June Palmer 1960s Model

June was prolific, largely thanks to her association with George Harrison Marks, but she also appeared in many other publications and was still modelling professionally well into her forties for magazines such as Mayfair.

She was born June Margaret Palmer on 1 August 1940 in Bromley, Kent.

As is often the case, there are many contradictory stories about the details of her private life. Researching the past is full of possibilities and dead ends, and there will inevitably be differences of opinion. However, we can set the record straight on some points beyond any doubt.

We know from a copy of her marriage certificate that June was married on 7 November 1964 at the Chelsea Register Office, when she was a 24-year-old photographic model. The lucky man was 20 years her senior: 44-year-old photographer and stuntman Arthur Howell, a fascinating and charming man with an exciting and varied career. He was Michael Caine’s stand-in and a stuntman on several of the famous Bond films, and he was a familiar face on television, appearing in hit series such as Robin Hood and The Persuaders.

June and Arthur set up and ran Strobe Studios in Clapham, South London. It was a respectable business that hired out studio space to amateur and professional photographers alike, and supplied them with models from Strobe’s books, among them Mary Millington (under her married name, Mary Maxted).
June later divorced Arthur, who died three years after the divorce. In 1989 she married David C. Milan in Chelmsford, where she died suddenly in 2004.

June began her career as a topless dancer at the Windmill Theatre, where countless British starlets, actors and comedians cut their teeth. If that name means nothing to you, watch the film Mrs Henderson Presents, starring Judi Dench and Bob Hoskins.
She went on to appear in all of Harrison Marks’ magazines (Kamera, Solo and others) and in numerous 8mm glamour films made by him and others, before graduating to parts in mainstream films.
She was an extremely good-looking woman, and for me she looks her absolute best in some of the more candid, relaxed shots.

We have recently acquired a sizeable collection of prints and negatives of June, which we believe were taken by the little-known photographer Peter A. Quinn. Many may never have been seen before.

Housewives at Play – Eros Comix

Housewives at Play - Eros Comics and Rebecca

“Housewives at Play”, published by Eros Comix from the late 1990s onwards, depicted housewives engaging in lesbian and BDSM games while their husbands were away. The illustrations, beautifully created by “Rebecca”, were very explicit and graphic, leaving little to the imagination.

Sixteen very good to nearly new condition copies have been added to the Adult Comic category.

Atomage Magazines

Atomage Rubberist Magazine

Atomage, the original A5-size magazine, was first published in 1972, and there are 32 editions. It was only available via subscription. A supplementary magazine was introduced with issue 13 in 1976, with there being 20 editions. You could never buy this separately; it had to be bought as an addition to the main magazine subscription. Both A5 magazines ended publication in 1980.

Atomage International A4 size was first published in 1981, with there being just 10 editions. Atomage Bondage and Rubberist were introduced in 1982, and they both had 5 editions each.

Atomage publications are becoming increasingly rare as collectors appreciate their scarcity and the quality of their content. I have just acquired a small collection of supplements, International, Bondage, and Rubberist editions, and am constantly on the lookout for more.

Maple Leaf Studios – Dover Road, Folkestone

Maple Leaf Studios - Folkstone

I have placed up for sale a small selection of original prints that originated from Maple Leaf Studios in Folkestone. These prints have attracted quite a bit of attention, with a few people contacting me to fill in some gaps with extra information. I like these pictures, and I am sure in there time they must have been quite popular.

What I Know or Don’t Know

I am told that Linda was the big star of Maple Leaf Studios, and I am also reliably informed that she was the photographer’s wife or partner. It must have been nice to keep it in-house that way. I do have other very similar-looking prints that could have possibly been produced and sold by Maple Leaf Studios. It would be helpful to have some clarification on this, especially if you ever bought prints from Maple Leaf Studios.

I have scanned a very poor photocopy of the information that would have been sent out if you responded to their advertisements, which I am told used to appear in the back pages of Fiesta and Escort. I have extracted the text from that sheet to make it more readable; it’s hard to believe that they actually sent out such poor copies to potential customers.

Prints

I have scanned a small selection and made them available as improved 5” x 7” reprints. I am keen to acquire more of these prints and am willing to pay well for them. Alternatively, I’d be happy to arrange exchange reimbursement if that would work better for you. Contact Me

Fiona Cooper – Catalogues or Magazines

Fiona Cooper sold picture-sets and videos from 1978 until 2017. They produced catalogues throughout this period. These were more than mere lists of films for sale; they contained quality full-page pictures and information about the models, aiming to entice you to purchase the videos and DVDs.

In reality, they were full-blown glamour magazines in their own right. However, with the internet gaining momentum, it became inevitable that the days were numbered for mail-order film sellers. Nowadays, we have highly popular websites that offer the same content but deliver pictures and videos digitally, instantly.

Fiona Cooper catalogues from that era are now considered vintage glamour magazines and have become highly collectible. If you collect these films, which are becoming increasingly rare, the catalogues are an invaluable sources of information.

Below is some text taken from the back of a VHS video that, at the time, you could hire from your local rental shop (remember those). It gives you an idea of how Fiona Cooper perceived themselves in the marketplace during that period. I have hundred plus Fiona Cooper catalogues that I will be listing here in the coming weeks. If this interests you, please check them out here.

VHS Tape Back Cover

FIONA COOPER videos have been at the forefront of adult glamour for some years now. Videos that can always be described as SEXY videos…but never as SEX videos. With their own easily recognisable style and format Fiona Cooper videos have amassed a considerable following amongst those who prefer a softer, sexier approach to nakedness rather than a hard, cold abrasiveness. Attractive girls who could grace any centrefold appear alongside “the girl from next door” in a pastiche of sensuality, sexiness, coyness and naturalness all bound together with an extensive wardrobe of sexy undies, uniforms, basques, etc that would do any lingerie shop justice!

Fiona Cooper Reviews

“The Fiona Cooper collection are a must for those of you with an eye for glitz underwear…Fiona’s got quite a treat in store…slick stripping and half decent soundtracks give the Fiona Cooper tapes an edge over many of the adult tapes” — Video World

“If you’ve ever wondered what it would be like to be a fly on the wall of a Dorothy Perkins changing room then you’re in for a treat here”… “Fiona’s fillies are not so coy” — Men Only

Readers Wives

I have a considerable amount of “Readers’ Wives” titles from the late 1980s and early 1990s, which I am going to start to list. “Readers’ Wives” from the 80s and 90s, in my opinion, are just so much better than nowadays, where everything is more polished and produced. I certainly prefer the more amateur feel that these magazines have. It is worth considering that if your wife or girlfriend wanted to show off all of her hidden treasures, then the “Readers’ Wives” sections or complete magazines devoted to just that were one way of showcasing yourself. We have to remember that internet access at home was not generally available until later in the 1990s, and even then, it was pretty limited. Nowadays, it is all too easy to set up an OnlyFans, Facebook, or Tumblr account and away you go. I have lots to choose from, and I am not going to list them all at once; it’s going to take me months. If you like “Readers’ Wives” magazines, be sure to keep checking back for newly added stock. Most of the stock I have is ex-retail and never been owned, with me having, in some instances, multiple copies of each title and number.

Janus – The Longest Running Spanking Magazine In The World

Janus (1971-2003) initially started as Mentor, but after only four issues, the name was changed to Janus, which is now synonymous with all things spanking and corporal punishment. The first couple of years of publication were not particularly oriented towards spanking, with the content covering general fetish topics. It was not until 1973, with the publication of some specials, that its focus shifted solely towards all things spanking. If you are reading this, you may already have considerable knowledge about the history of Janus and its associated titles such as Derriere, Kane, Roue, Blushes, and Februs.

BrazenBooks strives to source and maintain a reasonable amount of stock of magazines for collectors and those interested in spanking and corporal punishment.

Girls Of The World – 1970s Top Shelf Magazines

“Girls Of The World” – I don’t know much about these magazines and books beyond the occasional date present, but from browsing through them, they seem to be from the late 1960s and early 1970s. Overall, they are quite appealing. They feature a mix of colour and black-and-white pictures, with most being full-page images, while the text focuses on information about the models and is not overpowering. The printing quality and paper are both very good. From what I have, I’ve noticed two publishers, with the main one being Top Sellers Ltd in London. Additionally, there are some from Export Publications USA that bear a striking resemblance in style and content.

I have six original magazines and five special thick books that seem to be compilations of the original magazines. Treat yourself – You won’t be disappointed.

Fiesta 1970s – Russell Gay and Galaxy Publications

On sale are a few copies of Fiesta from the very early 1970s. I certainly a fan of these large format copies from the 1970s. I can’t work out if that’s because they are just so familiar, and you can remember them from the heady days of your youth. They are just so much more interesting than a lot of the books that are around nowadays. They were less in your face and more about the tease and what might be. Each to their own. Loads more books from the 1960s, ’70s, and ’80s to come.
